The dining scene in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay is set to welcome a new star, with Red Makeup Sha Yu Sichuan restaurant making its dazzling debut in early July 2025. This establishment, located at the Golden Sunshine Centre on Deng Long Street, boasts over 1,000 square feet of spaciousness and features 76 seats, allowing diners to savor authentic Sichuan cuisine in an ambiance rich in Sichuan flair—going beyond just spicy dishes.
The restaurant is co-managed by two masters of Sichuan cuisine—Master Hu Taiqing, a contemporary Sichuan culinary expert from the mainland, and Master Chen Qide, a seasoned local Sichuan chef. Master Hu brings over 30 years of experience to the table and has founded Principal’s Legend Hot Pot and Shu Yi Flavor, with his dishes being beloved by diners and winning multiple culinary awards. His partner, Master Chen, is a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s Sichuan dining scene, boasting nearly 60 years of experience, having served as head chef at several top Sichuan restaurants and catering to global political and business elites as well as royal family members.
Red Makeup Sha YuThe restaurant’s interior design blends the retro style of the 1930s, featuring nostalgic lighting and decorative elements that create a dining atmosphere that feels both vintage and modern. The walls are adorned with murals inspired by Sichuan elements, reflecting the spicy essence of Sichuan cuisine. This place is not just an excellent spot to savor delicious Sichuan dishes; it’s also an ideal venue to immerse yourself in a unique cultural vibe.
Regarding the menu, Master Hu and Master Chen have crafted a selection that preserves many classic Sichuan flavors, particularly highlighting A Feast of Flavors, which pushes the boundaries of traditional spiciness and showcases the rich layers and delicate flavors of Sichuan cuisine. The restaurant draws upon over 40 authentic spices and herbs from Sichuan, presenting a mouthwatering array of dishes, including exquisite cold dishes like Minty Chili Pepper King Crab and The Flavorful Couple’s Lung Slices, as well as rich and flavorful hot dishes such as Mapo Tofu with Lobster and Spicy Pastry with Smoked Eel, catering to a variety of palates.
