A passport is not only a symbol of identity but also a reflection of a nation. In fact, the well-known foreign website “Seasia” has ranked the “Most Beautiful Passports in the World.” Do you know what makes each one exquisite? Among global passport designs, the passports from Switzerland and Norway are undoubtedly among the most beautiful representations, especially since both countries feature their mountain ranges printed on their passports.
Switzerland

The design company RETINAA, dedicated to serving governments and brands, was commissioned in 2017 to design a new series of Swiss passports, creating a design that incorporates cutting-edge security features aimed at encapsulating the spirit of Switzerland.
The cover is primarily a minimalist red, accented with elements of the Swiss flag, showcasing a unique sense of national identity; paired with a cross symbolizing peace, justice, and brightness, it appears simple yet elegant.
The interior design features exquisite illustrations that showcase Swiss culture and history. Each page displays the magnificent natural landscapes of Switzerland, from the peaks of the Alps through the country’s 26 cantons, highlighting famous landmarks such as the St. Gotthard Mountain and the Rontdon Peak, making one feel as if they are immersed in this land. Furthermore, through in-depth research by the design team into Swiss geography and culture, these elements are skillfully integrated into the passport, transforming it into a piece of art that can be displayed.
Additionally, the Swiss passport incorporates cutting-edge anti-counterfeiting technology to ensure its security, preventing intrusion by forgers and tamperers. For instance, advanced laser engraving technology creates intricate, multi-layered patterns and text, adding a sci-fi feel to the interplay of light and shadow in the Swiss landscapes.
Norway

The Oslo-based brand and design studio Neue Design Studio won the design competition for Norway’s new passport in 2014. After six years of work, the team created a passport known for its fresh design and unique interior presentation, which clearly conveys Norway’s spirit of respecting tradition while being creative.
The cover features the colors red, white, and blue, which are characteristic of Scandinavian countries, reflecting the values of freedom and independence represented by their flags.
The team uses minimalist illustrations to incorporate the majestic natural landscapes of Norway, showcasing the unique charm of Norwegian culture. This includes depictions of Norway’s fjords, forests, and the northern lights. Additionally, under ultraviolet light, the illustrations can reveal different facets of day and night, dazzling like the aurora borealis in the night sky, leaving viewers in awe.
These two passports are not only symbols of identity but also a culmination of culture and design; the mountains have become their representation, showcasing the unique charm of the country. However, this travel document is also like a piece of art, allowing every passport holder to proudly display their nationality and reshape people’s perceptions and sense of identity towards their country.
