Emma McIntyre: The Embrace of the Swan
Emma McIntyre is renowned for her vivid abstract paintings characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic brushwork. She skillfully blends unconventional materials such as oil paint and iron oxide, exploring the possibilities of painting as if it were alchemy, driven by instinct and profound thought, expanding the boundaries of traditional perceptions of landscapes and the natural world. From the very beginning of her process, McIntyre introduces elements of chance, pouring paint from above to allow colors to converge into pools, splatter, and spread across the canvas. She then gradually builds the surface of the painting with layered, instinctive, and atmospheric brushstrokes.
This Hong Kong exhibition is centered around the band Mazzy Star’s 1996 album *Among My Swan*, which has profoundly inspired McIntyre. Additionally, the theme also alludes to the recurring imagery of swans and cranes in her work, motifs that are often utilized by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Sigmar Polke.
